MedData’s seasoned management team possesses levels of expertise that extend across various functional areas. Combined, senior management brings a total of 270 years of combined related experience to the business.
President and Chief Executive Officer
Ann Barnes has served as CEO since 2013, leading the company’s day-to-day business, as well as serving on MedData's Board of Directors. Barnes initially joined MedData as vice president of client services in November 2008 and was quickly promoted to the post of chief operating officer. In February 2013 Barnes was promoted to president, and in September 2013 to chief executive officer. Her career includes positions spanning sales, client services, operations and marketing functions. Before joining MedData, Barnes was executive vice president for the student loan division of Wachovia Bank. Previously, she led a national sales force for New Horizons Computer Learning, the world’s largest computer training company. During the first 18 months of her employment there, revenues grew from $12 million to $44 million. Prior, Barnes held various leadership roles with Avolent, an enterprise software solution for electronic bill payments. She began her career with Xerox Corporation in the mid-1980s, where she was consistently promoted into positions throughout the central and western regions. At the time of her departure in December 2000, she held the role of vice president, general market operations in the western region.
Barnes is a graduate of the University of the Pacific in San Francisco.
Stephen F. Ghiglieri
Chief Financial Officer
Stephen Ghiglieri has served as MedData's chief financial officer since 2013, prior to which he served as the executive vice president, chief operating officer and chief financial officer for NeurogesX, Inc., a commercial stage specialty pharmaceutical company, since October 2003. Stephen has also served as chief financial officer of Hansen Medical, Inc., a medical device company; executive vice president, chief financial officer and corporate secretary of Avolent, Inc., a software company; vice president, finance, chief financial officer and corporate secretary of Andromedia, Inc., a software company; vice president, finance and administration, chief financial officer and corporate secretary of Oacis Healthcare Systems, Inc., a healthcare technology company; controller of Oclassen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a pharmaceutical company; and audit manager of PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP.
Mr. Ghiglieri received a B.A. in business administration from California State University, Hayward, and is also a Certified Public Accountant (inactive).
Dr. Hallet Watz MD, MDA, FACEP
Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Hal Watz serves on the executive committee of MedData and holds the position of chief medical officer. Since 1987, he has led the billing, coding, and collection operations for Peak Emergency Medical Billing (PEAK), a billing service acquired by MedData in May 2008. In this capacity, he grew the business to one of the premier billing companies in the southwest. He is also a practicing Emergency Medicine Physician and president of Front Range Emergency Specialists. Dr. Watz utilizes his expertise in both medicine and billing management to provide strategic direction for the company as well as to drive tactical programs that optimize reimbursement and provide critical reporting and practice management information for clients.
Chief Information and Security Officer
Sue Chilson, Chief Information and Security Officer, holds a Bachelor of Arts from University of Montana, Missoula and is a certified Project Management Professional with more than 20 years experience leading organizational efforts including software conversions, development and systems implementations utilizing System Development Life Cycle methodologies. Chilson has significant experience managing multiple application support teams responsible for development, maintenance and production support of critical business applications. Chilson began her career in healthcare spending 8 years with Blue Cross of Washington and Alaska then moved to the banking industry where she held the role of Vice President of Technology. She joined MedData in 2003 as Chief Information Officer where she has developed and leads a large successful IT organization both domestic and offshore. Recently Chilson has successfully managed a large IT Organization while managing multiple acquisition integrations supporting multiple sites and brands during a period of double digit growth for MedData. She is the recipient of the 2011 Best In Biz Technology Executive of the Year Silver Award. Chilson is a graduate of the University of Montana.
Senior Vice President Client Services and Sales
Julie Zgrabik, Vice President of Client Development for MedData was appointed to lead the Client Services efforts in 2008 through the acquisition of Summit. Julie played a critical role in maintaining Summit Client Satisfaction and Retention through the development and execution of the MedData/Summit integration and client transition Plan. Zgrabik ‘s expertise in physician revenue cycle management and managed care contract negotiations are a result of 20 year’s experience in Physician Practice Management for large Physician Groups and world class healthcare organizations such as the Cleveland Clinic. Zgrabik’s continual success has resulted in promotion from Director of Client Services to Vice President of Client Development and Implementation in 2009 and most recently promoted to take on leadership of the MedData Sales Organization in addition to Client Services, now serving MedData as Senior Vice President Client Services and Sales.
Vice President of Sales, Patient Pay
Dustin Whisenhunt joined MedData as Vice President Client Services and Sales, Patient Pay in 2013 to lead the expansion of Patient Reimbursement Solutions. With more than 15 years of health care IT experience, Whisenhunt provides key leadership and visionary strategy for the Patient Pay team. A seasoned expert in the financial healthcare industry, he also oversees the management of the Client Services team, which focuses on providing clients with the highest level of service. Prior to MedData, Whisenhunt served as Vice President of Sales for Prognosis, a leader in HIT solutions for rural hospitals, and for TransUnion Healthcare, a revenue cycle solution & management services company. He also held executive leadership positions for AllScripts / Eclipsys, a health care solutions company in Chicago, and Cerner, an international health care solutions corporation headquartered in Kansas City, Mo. Whisenhunt is a graduate of the University of Missouri.
Vice President of Marketing
Chris Farrell joined MedData as Vice President Marketing in 2011 to lead the company’s first dedicated, centralized marketing strategy. Prior to joining MedData, Farrell was vice president of marketing for the education finance division of Wachovia Bank, during which volume increased a minimum of 22% each year while the industry grew at an average rate of 8%. Prior, Farrell held various marketing leadership roles with Educaid, a student loan company; Henwood Energy Services, Inc., an international energy software/consulting company; and McCormick & Co., Inc., to include marketing communications, copy, creative services, sales, marketing analytics, customer experience and sales support teams. Farrell is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles.
Vice President of Operations, Coding & Billing
Ales Cejka, Vice President of Operations, Coding & Billing, leads our certified coders and ensures all are 100% certified with AAPC or AHIMA certification. Cejka has a comprehensive record of developing and implementing solutions that improve the patient experience, increase productivity, and drive down costs. He began his tenure at the company as a Coding Regional Manager in 2006 and was promoted five times in 7 years, playing a vital role in the implementation of MedData’s offshore operations. He became the Director of Medical Coding and Auditing in 2010 and Vice President of Operations, Coding & Billing in 2014. Prior to joining MedData, Ales worked as a medical coder for EA Health in San Diego. He studied medical coding at UCSD and earned a degree in education from Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. Cejka speaks English, Czech, and Russian.
Vice President of Operations, Patient Pay
Spencer Galloway, Vice President of Operations, Patient Pay, has served over 20 years in executive leadership in senior financial, operational and general management roles with an emphasis on helping small to mid-sized businesses build to maturity and profitability. Prior to joining MedData, Mr. Galloway served as COO and CFO for the Grand Automotive Group, one of West Michigan's largest auto dealer groups. As CFO of the MTS Transportation Systems and Bay Logistics group, a $150 mm organization serving the automobile manufacturing industry, Galloway lead the business through a complete turnaround, including reorganizing the business structure, restructuring debt, acquiring and divesting several businesses, and consummating an abundance of commercial real estate transactions. Previous leadership positions include President of Price Industries, Inc., a designer and builder of material handling systems for the surface finishing industry, and President of Great Lakes Fasteners and Supply Co., an industrial distributor of fasteners to manufacturers where both companies grew in revenue and profitability. Galloway is a business administration graduate of Cornerstone University and earned his MBA from Western Michigan University.
Vice President of Human Resources
Barb Astler, Vice President of Human Resources, joined MedData in 2011 in an effort to build a strong Human Resources function, assure policy, practices and compliance and to foster a highly productive, winning culture. In addition to leading the HR Team, she leads all HR and Culture related merger, acquisition, and integration activities for MedData. Her successes to date include two successful acquisitions and integrations, automation and improved HR efficiencies, decrease in voluntary turnover, and development of a strong recruitment brand. Astler’s contributions have been focused on developing Employer Best Practices and High Performance Cultures amidst great change. Her HR Programs have attained National Recognition for Employer Best Practices, Work-life Initiatives and Training and Development programs. Barb also possesses significant experience leading HR activities for mergers, acquisitions, and IPO. She has presented as faculty in conjunction with Working Mother Magazine and their local efforts to promote work-life, diversity and best practices among Employers and is adjunct faculty for IQPC as an expert on Career-Pathing, Succession Planning and HR Metrics. Astler holds an MBA from Nova Southeastern University (Davie, Florida) with a specialization in Organizational Development.
Vice President of Practice Management Services
John Poppe, Vice President of Practice Management Services, brings more than 40 years of senior and executive level management experience with an emphasis on operational and financial management, development and implementation of major capital expenditure programs, and strategic planning. He began his tenure with MedData in 1998, serving as a General Manager and was promoted four times while playing a crucial role in the development of the company’s client and practice management. Prior to MedData, he worked in executive leadership roles for Initial Security Services and the Hamakua Sugar Company. Poppe is a graduate of Oregon State University and earned his MBA from Pepperdine University.
Vice President of Operations, Alegis
Mr. Willey brings more than twenty five (25) years of experience in healthcare receivables with emphasis on Third Party Eligibility. Scott’s passion for this business began in 1984 when he started his career as a field representative working closely with patients in need. His many years of experience on the front lines have served him well in his career, where he has been both a corporate officer and eventually a managing partner of one of the largest healthcare receivables companies in the country. Scott’s responsibilities at Alegis include overall operations, with emphasis on strategic planning and marketing.
Senior Vice President, Alegis
Mr. Turek has been a licensed attorney in Texas for more than 17 years. Mr. Turek is also licensed in Utah, California, Nevada, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Missouri. From 2001 until 2008, Mr.Turek worked as an executive and General Counsel for Cardon Healthcare Network, Inc. During this same time, Mr. Turek also owned and operated The Turek Law Firm, PLLC which handled third party liability and denials litigation for hospital clients across the country. At the time of his departure from Cardon in March of 2008, Mr. Turek was responsible, as the Chief Operating Officer, for Cardon's complete company operations, including setting up new projects, hiring and training new employees and managers, as well as maintaining projects. Mr. Turek performed these duties in eleven states and with more than 200 hospital clients.
